Winterfell

The Dreadfort

Place Kings of Winter

The Dreadfort stands on the Weeping Water in the east of the North, north of the Hornwood and south of Last Hearth. Its walls are thick and its towers massive, and the merlons along its battlements are cut to points.

The Boltons are an old house of the First Men, and for thousands of years they were the Starks’ bitterest rivals. As the Red Kings they held the land from the Last River to the White Knife. They flayed their enemies, and old tales say a room in the Dreadfort still holds the skins of Stark lords.

The last of the Red Kings knelt and sent his sons to Winterfell as hostages, and the Boltons have been bannermen since, though not always quiet ones. In one of their risings, it is said, the Dreadfort held out for years against a Stark siege. Their banner is still a flayed man, red on pink.
