Karhold
A thousand years ago Karlon Stark, a younger son of Winterfell, put down a rebel lord and was given land in the east for it. He built a hold there, and men called it Karl’s Hold. Over the centuries the name wore down to Karhold, and his line came to be called the Karstarks.
Karhold stands in the eastern part of the North, south of the Bay of Seals, with the Grey Cliffs beyond it to the east. The Karstarks are big, fierce men in cloaks of sealskin, bearskin and wolfskin. Their banner is a white sunburst on black.
They are of the Stark blood still, and they remember it. In a hungry winter old men of Karhold say they are going hunting, walk out into the snow, and do not come back, so that the young may eat.
