Winterfell

The Kingsroad

Place After the Conquest The Gates

The kingsroad was built in the reign of King Jaehaerys the First, to bind the Seven Kingdoms together. It begins at Castle Black on the Wall and ends far in the south at Storm’s End, with King’s Landing on the way. In the North it is the one road that matters.

North of the Neck it grows quiet, and the inns stand far apart. It climbs out of the bogs on a long causeway past Moat Cailin, passes the White Knife and comes to Winterfell. Beyond Winterfell it thins to a track between scattered farms, and so goes on to the Wall.

Lords of the North go south by it to war. Men sent to the Wall come north by it, and most of them never come back.
